AUSM “AWESOME” TROPHY RAISES THE BAR OF CHARITY GOLF TOURNAMENT
The Mines Resort & Golf Club, Kuala Lumpur – The prestigious and exclusive The Mines Resort & Golf Club played host to the inaugural AUSM “Awesome” Trophy Charity Golf Tournament 2018 held on last Saturday, 29 September 2018. The tournament was truly an exceptional event that brought together 76 avid and prominent corporate sponsors, successful entrepreneurs and USM Alumni members from Kedah, Penang, Perak, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Johor, Trengganu, Kelantan, and Sarawak for an awesome day of golf, networking, and fundraising.
The day was filled with lots of excitement and surprises for the participants from the start to the end. The participants were greeted with big smiles from The Mines staff and the Event Organisers and after a swift registration they were ushered to their dedicated and personalised lockers. Their personalised tournament t-shirts, caps, shoe bags and golf balls were beautifully placed inside each respective lockers. Then they were ushered to lunch at the exquisite Hall of Fame while waiting for the arrival of USM’s Chancellor DYMM Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Ibni Almarhum Tuanku Syed Putra Jamalullail who had graced both lunch and group photography and then the royal prize presentation & auction dinner.
The all-inclusive, one-day golf event offered golfers the opportunity to play on one of the best world class championship golf courses in the region, The Mines Resort & Golf Club. The magnificent masterpiece by Robert Trent Jones Jr. is built on the former site of the largest open cast tin mine in the world. The Mines Resort & Golf Club has won many prestigious awards such as a Top 100 Course, #2 Course in Malaysia, and a Top 10 Courses in Asia. The Mines has also hosted professional events such as the World Cup of Golf won by Tiger Woods in 1997 and the Kuala Lumpur Open (Asian Tour) event. Although The Mines plays 6,191 meters from the championship tees, but it is nonetheless a golfer-friendly layout, thus providing a great game of golf to the AUSM Trophy tournament participants who are golfers of all skills level.
According to Prof. Tan Sri Dato’ Dzulkifli A. Razak, the President of Persatuan Alumni USM as well as the Organising Chairman of the AUSM Trophy, “Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) will be celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2019 and the inaugural AUSM Trophy Charity Golf Tournament will kickstart and roll out our “Road to USM50” Celebrations programmes and activities.”
He further added, “We are very delighted to receive a very good response from our USM Alumni members as well as the industry players from all over the country who had responded to our plight to tee-up to raise funds on the greens for USM Special Needs Children Funding Programme and Persatuan Alumni USM. We hope that the AUSM Trophy will grow to generate more funds in the coming years.”
The Persatuan Alumni USM’s noble intention in organising the inaugural AUSM Trophy Charity Golf Tournament is to raise funds for the:
- USM Special Needs Children Funding Programme for Autism, Deafness, Blindness, Downs, Learning Disabilities, and Cerebral Palsy, as well as the
- Upgrading and renovation work of the Persatuan Alumni USM “Awesome House” which is located at a prime spot on the main campus in Penang.
The USM Special Needs Children Funding is used to help the marginalised community in achieving a better quality of life through education and therapeutic applications. Aside from meeting the special needs of the patients, the funds will also be used to provide therapeutic aids for children such as wheelchairs and walkers as well as cash contributions for the special needs of the poor.
One of the AUSM Trophy charity beneficiaries under the USM Special Needs Children Funding is PRINCE “Programme for Inclusive Children’s Excellence” Child Care Centre which is funded by USM through its BJIM (Division of Industry and Community Network – BJIM) and is located within the USM Pusat Kesihatan Hospital in Kelantan. PRINCE Child Care Centre is also supported by some Ministries including the Ministry of Education and the Department of Social Welfare Malaysia (JKMM). PRINCE Child Care Centre houses more than 40 children aged between 2 to 6 years old. Some of these children are suffering from autism, deafness, learning disabilities & cerebral palsy. Through BJIM, USM’s Professors and academic staff from the School of Health Sciences support and assist the children by conducting medical research work, treatment, and care to help the children.
According to En Mohd Ali Mohd Salleh, the architect and designer of the Persatuan Alumni USM new “Awesome House”, “The new Awesome House, located at a prime spot on the main campus in Penang, is scheduled to be ready for the 50th Anniversary Celebrations at the end of September 2019. When ready it will provide an elegant and comfortable space equipped with modern facilities for the Alumni members and students to meet and engage regularly in building a stronger rapport with their alma mater. The “Awesome House” is an anchor and focal point for Alumni activities and gatherings, connecting members, students, and the University under the USM motto of “We Lead”.
Mohd Ali who is the Deputy Organising Chairman and also a USM Alumni member from the first batch of Architecture Degree Programme 85-90 (this particular batch is fondly known as the Ali Setan Batch) further said, “The Awesome House is a one-and-a-half storey building with 9,000-square feet area comprises the Persatuan Alumni USM administrative office, a business centre, meeting rooms, and an Alumni Plaza. My design is inspired by blending the colonial and contemporary architecture into the Awesome House’s design to preserve the Penang culture yet providing a modern look and facade.”
Tee-off was in the afternoon and apart from the brotherhood on the greens, there was a wide range of novelty competitions to spice things up. Professor Tan Sri Dzulkifli said, “The tournament is a perfect start to roll out our USM50 Celebrations which will be celebrated in October 2019. It has been an epic 50-year journey for USM with numerous milestones and achievements. This charity golf tournament is definitely an ideal meeting point for many of our USM Alumni members to reconvene, reconnect and re-establish networking among them. Not only that, this tournament is also a golden opportunity for the USM Alumni members to meet new people from the industry to start a good networking amongst them.”
Mohd Ali then added, “The inaugural AUSM Trophy was indeed a day filled with thrills and frills for the golfers as they had participated in the various competitions, including the hole-in-one, longest drive, nearest-to-the-pin, nearest-to-the-line contests and stood an “awesome-ly” good chance of winning the grand prizes in the Medal A, B, and C categories as well as the team event category. The winners walked away with handsome prizes much to the envy of those who were not so lucky enough to win any. However, at the end of the night, everyone was a winner as they each won at least one lucky draw prize to bring home together with a certificate of participation.”
He further continued, “Not only had we received a very encouraging response from participants who were the Alumni members and more so from the corporate sector but we also welcomed many non-golfer Alumni members who had attended the royal prize giving dinner & auction to play their role in the fundraising.
Another exciting activity we showcased was a special “clinic booth” put up by our Official Medical Team Partner, Sunway Medical Centre who was gracious to provide an ambulance and a free Health Screening (BP & Glucose only) to the participants and guests for free.
